Alexander S. Dysart, son of Duncan and Elizabeth Dysart, was born October 24, 1832[1] in Scotland.[2][3]
Alexander seems to have arrived in America on November 5, 1833 in the ship Arkwright traveling from Dundee, Scotland to New York with his father, Duncan.[4] It is not clear whether Elizabeth is with them or whether Duncan married in America shortly after arrival, although Elizabeth is recorded on census records as born in Scotland.
The 1860 U.S. Federal Census records Alexander Dysart, age 24 born in Scotland, living with his parents Duncan Dysart, age 46 born in Scotland, and Elizabeth Dysart, age 44 born in Scotland. His siblings are also in the household: Ellen age 20 born in NY, Robert age 15 born in NY, Margaret age 11 born in NY, Joseph age 8 born in NY, and William age 9 months born in NY.[5]
Alexander Dysart enlisted in Delhi, Delaware Co., New York as a private into the 3rd New York Cavalry on August 22, 1861 for a three year term of duty. His father's name was listed as "Duncan." Alexander was mustered out August 21, 1864.[6] The New York Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts indicate that he was appointed a Wagoner in October 1861.[7]

The 1870 U.S. Federal Census records Alexander Dysart, age 35 born in Scotland, living with his parents Duncan and Elizabeth Dysart in Delhi, Delaware Co., New York. His sister Margaret and brother William are also in the household.[8]

The 1880 U.S. Federal Census records Alexander S. Dysart, a farmer age 45 born in Scotland, living in Delhi, Delaware Co., New York. In his household are his wife Emily, age 41 born in NY, daughter Lizzie age 7 born in NY, daughter Mary age 4 born in NY, son James Duncan age 2 born in NY, mother Elizabeth age 69 born in Scotland, and sister Euphemia age 42 born in Scotland.[9]
The 1890 Veterans Schedule records Alexander Dysart living in Delhi, Delaware Co., New York as having served for three years in Co. E, 3rd NY Cavalry. He is suffering from fever, ague and rheumatism and is not receiving a pension.[10]
Alexander S. Dysart died February 13, 1896 and was buried in the West Delhi Cemetery, Delhi, Delaware Co., New York.[11]
