Biography

Birth

Edith was born about 1877 in Winnebago, Thurston, Nebraska. She was the daughter of My Soul Earth and Mary Black Wolf.

Name

Her Hocąk name was variously rendered as E-nu-ah-jes-ki-pin-win-kaw (1890) and He-nuk-ah-jay-skae-pin-win-kaw (1898). These are for Hinųkacasképįwįga, "Woman who is Pleasant to Look At", a Bear Clan personal name, where hinųka means, "wife, woman"; Ja, ca means, "to look (at)"; ske, sge, "truly, assuredly"; , "good, fine, beautiful"; -wį-, a feminine gender infix; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names. A more literal translation would be, "She is a Wife Truly Good to Look At". This name implies that she and her father, My Soul Earth, were members of the Bear Clan.

She initially had the Anglo name "Sarah" (1890 census), but that was later changed to "Edith". (1896 census)

Marriages

She first married Benjamin Lowry, who died ca. 1900.

She next married Late Rave, 9 September 1901. Inexplicably, they were again married on 29 May 1908. (Marriage Recs.)

Children

Edith Earth had the following children with Late Rave:

Name Birth Source
Henukaw = Emily 1901 1910, 1918, 1920 censuses
Earnest 1903 1910, 1918 censuses
Horace Wilson 18 March 1904 1910, 1918, 1920, 1922, 1924 censuses
Lila = Alvena 13 October 1905 1910, 1918, 1920, 1922, 1924 censuses
Edna 4 July 1907 1910, 1918, 1920, 1922, 1924 censuses
John Jr. 6 June 1909 1910, 1918, 1920, 1922, 1924 censuses
Anna 7 October 1912 1918, 1922, 1924 censuses
Rudy 1913 1920 census
Dan 1914 1918 census

Henukaw is for Hīnū́gā, the birth order name for the First Daughter. Dan appears to have died in childhood and Rudy is anomalous, perhaps a child that Late Rave had with another partner. John "Jr." is also an anomaly, being named as if he were the son of Late's brother John, but always himself consistently naming Late as his father.

Death

She passed away about 1918. (1918, 1919 censuses)
