Biography

Birth

Myron was born in 1834 somewhere in Wisconsin, which at the time was part of Michigan Territory.

Names

His Hocąk name was given as Xung-man-ni-gah (Find a Grave), which is for Kōxmąnįga, "Walking Noise", an attested Upper Moiety name referring to the noise made by Thunderbirds. The first syllable represented by xung, is actually a metathesis. This name comes from kōx, "noise (including whistles)"; mąnį, "to walk", and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names.

The Hocągara have a joking relationship between themselves and their maternal uncles. Humorous insults and practical jokes are exchanged without anyone being expected to take offense. My Soul Earth used to insist that his uncles call him Šią́gega, "Berdache", the name of the Man in the Moon. When the Moon blesses effete men, they have no choice but to "take up the skirt" and become berdaches. So the word šįą́ge is applied generally to any effeminate man. The joke was that My Soul Earth had gone on the warpath while his uncles had stayed behind, like those who take up the skirt.

Appearance

1865 Omaha Scout payroll records described him as 5'11", dark complexion, with black eyes and hair. (Find a Grave)
