Biography

This profile is part of the Eastman Name Study.

Tilton was born in 1741, the son of Peter Eastman.[1]

1776 Project
Private Tilton Eastman served with New York Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Tilton Eastman is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A035813.

He served at least twice in the American Revolutionary War:[2]

  1. under Captain Bogardis' company of Queens County, NY beginning 16 May 1760
  2. as a Private under Colonel James McClaghry's command in the Ulster County, NY militia.

Between periods of service, he married Mary "Polly" Owen in 1769 and they had Jonathan Owen Eastman.

Then he married Remembrance Rowlee[1] and she had twelve children[1] as numbered by Rix, but only named three

  1. Peter, b. 1774;[1]
  2. Daniel Ward, b. 1778[1]
  3. Polly who married Mr. Seeley[1]

He died in 1805 in Hamburg, New Jersey.[1]

Research Notes

  • It appears that some of the children Tilton supposedly had might belong to other Eastman families. More research is needed Fetterly-28 00:25, 15 September 2021 (UTC)
  • Update - In the Rix book, "Hist. and Genealogy of the Eastmans .".. on p. 192, item 239, Polly and Tilton's children are listed: Jonathan, Peter, Daniel Ward and Polly. No other names are given. Fetterly-28 09:09, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[1]
  • Edmund West's Family Data Collection from Ancestry contains two records that show "Laird" as the mother of Tilton Eastman[3][4] Fetterly-28, 6 June 2022
  • Since Peter, Tilton's father, married twice and all of his known children were born before the date of Peter's second marriage to Esther Laird, it is reasonable to associate all of Peter's children to his unnamed first wife. The presence of Laird as the name of Tilton's stepmother as his mother in Edmund West's Familly Data Collection does not change this, especially when that Family Data Collection has a poor reputation for accuracy and reliability. I suggest we drop the children who are not specifically named until we can prove they belong here.

This guy matches another Tilton Eastman (Eastman-2535), but the match was rejected. I propose they be merged, as Polly Owen is mentioned as a wife on both profiles.

To my knowledge there are at least four Tilton Eastmans. One is the son of Peter (Eastman-123), One is Peter's son Tilton's son Tilton (Eastman-104), the third is Peter's son William's son Tilton (Eastman-1757), and the fourth is Rev. Tilton F (Eastman-1474) (1773-1842), son of Ebenezer and Mary (Dickinson) Eastman. At the current time both of Peter's grandsons Tiltons are shown as married to Esther Moon Eastman and so was Rev TF. She wasn't married to all three men!
