Biography

Eliza Eaton was born to John Eaton and Ann(e) Eaton on 21 October 1845 in High Street, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire^[1][2] where the family lived above her father's Shoe making shop.^[3] Eliza was baptised at St Modwen's in Burton on Nov 20 1845.^[4]

By the 1861 census, the family were still in Burton, but at a new location in Station Street. Eliza was working as a Dressmaker.^[5]

On Christmas Eve 1866 Eliza married local butcher William Henry "Harry" Waterson at St Modwen's church in Burton.^{[6] [7]}

The 1871 census shows Eliza (referred to as Ellen) and Harry living in the Horninglow area of Burton with their three young children (Thomas, Mary Ann and James) not far from Harry's father's pub.^[8]

The couple had a fourth, and final child, Jane (known as Minnie) in 1872.

On 21 July 1875, aged only 29, Eliza passed away in Station Street in Burton. She had suffered from Rheumatic Fever for 9 days & Pericarditis for 2 days.^[9][10].

In 1881 young Thomas and James were in the local workhouse. Minne was living with Eliza's brother and his family. Mary Ann is possibly living with another relative as there is a "Mary Watterson, niece" living in Burton.

In Stepenhill Cemetery, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire^[11][12] there are two neighbouring headstones:

• In Affectionate Remembrance of George Eaton who died Aptil 1st 1875 aged 24 years also of Eliza Waterson sister of the above who died July 21st 1875 aged 29 years
• In Affectionate Remembrance of Thomas Waterson who died August 26th 1875 aged 56 years "thy will be done" also of Jane wife of the above who died February 25th 1877 in the 54th year of her age "prepare to meet they God" also of William Henry Waterson who died July 23rd 1878 aged 34 year.^[13]
