William was born in Hamilton, New York, on February 4, 1851. He was the son of George W. and Eliza H. Boardman Eaton.[1] William married Lizzie Blesh of Brooklyn, New York, on September 7, 1890.[2][3]
A few years after graduating from Colgate University in 1869, William joined the U.S. Navy in 1872. On June 1, 1895, William recieved a commission as Chief Engineer. William was the fleet engineer for the Pacific Squadron from 1899-1900. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on November 18, 1907. William retired as a Commodore on June 30, 1908.[4]

William was a Cadet Engineer aboard the USS Amphitrite during the Spanish-American War. He served during the San Juan engagement on May 12, 1898 and again on August 8, 1898 in the Cape San Juan.[5] See image on this page.
In 1892, William was appointed as Examiner of naval engineering graduates at the Imperial University in Tientsin, China. William then became an Inspector of engineering material and ordinance for the U.S. Navy . He passed away in 1936.[6]
