Richard Eaves was baptised on 6 August 1736 at St. Martin in Birmingham, Warwickshire.[1] His mother was Sarah (Ruston) Eaves and his father probably Richard Eaves. Richard inherited lands in Yardley, called Sarehole, from his father in 1764, where he lived.
Richard had a relationship with Catherine Essex. He began employing Catherine in 1766 but within five months, on the promise of marriage, they began a relationship. They had two children together, one passing away shortly after birth.[2] These were:
Mary Essex was baptised on 25 February 1771 at St. Philip.[3]
Elizabeth Essex was baptised on 25 February 1771 at St. Philip in Birmingham.[4] She was probably buried on 2 June 1771 at St. Martin in Birmingham.[5]
In 1774 Richard hoped to marry a lady of fortune, and with Catherine and one child still living with him, he asked his friend Joseph Cottrell if he would marry her and take care of the child, in exchange for a substantial amount of money and some property.[2] Catherine Essex and Joseph Cottrell married on 27 September 1774, possibly in Yardley.[6]
Richard also married. Richard Eaves (of Yardley) and Hannah Southall (of Astley) married on 6 September 1774 at Astley in Worcestershire, by licence.[7][8]
Richard was declared bankrupt on 6 March 1775 before he paid Joseph, so Joseph took him to court for the amount owed.[2]
