Thomas was born in February 1822 to Mary Ebbon, an unmarried woman. He was publicly baptised on the 16th of June.[1][2]
Thomas seems to have remained in the area since he appears in Old Buckenham at the time of the 1841 census. He appears to be living in the home of William Wingfield at Church Green, and was recorded as an agricultural labourer.[3]
On the 16th of August 1855, Thomas married Sarah Collins at Market Harborough, Leicestershire. The banns had been read on June 17th, 24th and July 1st by William Scarbrough.[4][5][6][7]
The following year, their son William was born (21st of June). Thomas was described on the birth registration as a 'Railway Labourer'.
Sometime between 1856 and 1861, the young family moved to Staffordshire.
At the time of the 1861 census, Thomas, Sarah and William were living in Coseley' on Broad Street. They appeared to share a house on Broad Street with his mother's brother, William Collins, and his family.[8]
1861 Census - Broad Street, Coseley, Staffordshire
His son William married Phoebe Mills in Lower Gornal in 1875 and Thomas was recorded as the father "Thomas Ebbon - Labourer"[11]
Sadly, Thomas died only a few years later in 1878 at the age of 58. His death certificate lists his cause of death as "Intestinal obstruction; Retention of Urine; Exhaustion". His occupation was given as 'Railway Labourer'. The informant, 'Ann Rollins', was recorded as his sister but this was actually his wife's sister, Ann (Collins) Rawlins.[12]
Research Notes
Parents
father's name given as Thomas Ebben upon marriage but there is no other evidence for this
Old Buckenham bastardy papers start 1824
mother appears to only receive parish relief to March 1823
no payments received by the church (by a father) for Ebben child year preceding and following his birth
Census
1841 census - William Wingfield married Mary Sear in 1833. Both were recorded as single at the time of their marriage so this Mary is not his mother. (Also staying there was a lad of similar age, Jeremiah Sparrow - they were likely boarders unrelated to the family.)
1851 census - not yet found
1861 census - Sarah's brother next door
1871 census - Brick Kiln Street, Coseley no longer exists but was located in the area between Broad Street and Edge Street (based on neighbouring streets - White St and Chapel St- in 1871 census) - view on modern map
