Biography

William Eccleston was born on 29 May 1716 in Corna Roe, Lancashire, near Singleton (also spelled elsewhere Cornaroe, Cornarow, Corner Row). He was the son of Isaac and Mary Eccleston, who were Quakers; his mother was an itinerant Quaker missionary, who (after her marriage) travelled round northern England on a horse donated by Freckleton Meeting, with a kindred spirit, Agnes Tomlinson.

William married Rebecca Weaver on 7 March 1740 in Kendal, Westmoreland (or according to the FamilySearch tree entry for him, 7 March 1742 in Preston Patrick). She was the daughter of Daniel Weaver of Preston Patrick, who died before 28 Jan 1744/5.[1]

Their son Isaac Eccleston was born on 2 Jun 1743 in Freckleton, Lancashire.

Their son Daniel Eccleston was born in 1745 at Corna Roe, Lancashire.

William's mother died in 1745.

From 1749, William and Rebecca belonged to Whitehaven Monthly Meeting; William was appointed an Elder there in 1755.

William died on 22 Jul 1784, aged 68, and was buried on 25 Jul in the Friends Burying-Ground, Lancaster. He was described as "late of Whitehaven, Lancaster".

Rebecca died on 22 Jan 1785, aged 76, and was buried on 25 Jan in the Friends Burying-Ground, Lancaster.[2]

Research Notes

Tyson quotes Hewitson as saying that the Eccleston family "are recorded in the Parish Registers of St. Michael's on Wyre. Thomas Eccleston, Esq., of Eccleston Hall, died in 1592 and left a legacy to Nicholas Eccleston, ironmonger of Lancaster, who became Mayor in 1599 and 1613 and died in 1617. His brother, Richard, was one of three Richard Ecclestons: Richard of Great Singleton, yeoman, who died c. 1624; Richard of Langthwaite, yeoman, died c. 1627 and Richard of Cornrow, Kirkham, yeoman, died 1638." (Tyson p. 2)
She quotes Quaker Annals of the Fylde by Dilworth Abbott, 1931, as saying that William's mother Mary married Isaac Eccleston in 1713, and accompanied Agnes Tomlinson on a visit to Friends in other parts of the country (no date is given).
