Marek Edelman died on October 2, 2009. He was the last surviving fighter of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943 and arguably the most endearing character of his generation.
Marek Edelman was born in 1919 in Gomel, Belarus.
His family had moved to Warsaw in the 1920s, after fleeing the Soviet Union, where twelve of his uncles had been liquidated by the Blocheviks for socialist opposition.
His father Natan Feliks, who died in 1924, was close to the Trudoviki,
Labor Party activists who were to join the Russian Socialist Revolutionary Party after 1917, and his mother Cecylia Percowska was an activist in the Labor Party.
Bund ( Algemeyner Yidisher Arbeter Bund in Lite, Poyln a Rusland), the General Union of Jewish Workers, which was both a party and a union, socialist, secular and opposed to both Zionism (Lenin described the Bundists as " Zionists who are seasick ") and the Bolsheviks.
