James Eden was born in 1889 in Abram. He was the son of Henry Eden and Mary Jane (Ashurst) Eden.
By April 5th 1891, they were living in Willow Terrace, Abram. Henry and Thomas were still working as coal miners. Agnes and Margaret were employed, but no job title was listed for them. In addition to Thomas, Agnes, Margaret and Mary Ellen who had been born before the 1881 census, three more children were now in the family: Elizabeth Ann (aged 8), Amelia (5) and James (2), all born in Abram.
Agnes was married in 1893. Margaret was married in 1898.
By March 31st 1901, the family were in Willow Street, Abram. Henry was now a highway labourer, but Thomas was still hewing coal. Agnes and Margaret had set up house with their husbands, but Mary Ellen was still single and living with her parents. She was working as a coal pit brow labourer, as was Elizabeth Ann. Amelia, now 14, and James, now 12, were not in paid employment. They had a boarder, Henry's nephew John Eden, who was a coal hewer.
Thomas was married in 1902; Mary Ellen was married in 1905; Elizabeth Ann was married in 1907; Amelia was married in 1908.
James's mother died in 1911, and was buried on March 15th 1911 at St John the Evangelist Church in Abram.
By April 2nd 1911, James and his father were boarding with Elizabeth Ann and her husband in Willow Street, Abram. Henry was working as a general labourer for U. D. C. (the urban district council). James was 22, and a haulage hand in a coal mine. This was also Elizabeth Ann's husband's occupation.
On February 17th 1912, James married Emily Sherrington at St Nathaniel's Church in Platt Bridge, Hindley. James was 22 and a miner, and his address was 40 Walthew Lane. Emily was 18 and lived at King William Hotel. Neither had been married before. The fathers were Henry Eden (labourer) and William Sherrington (miner, deceased). The witnesses were John Partington and Jemima Jones.
James's father died in 1913 at the age of 63, and was buried in the churchyard of St John the Evangelist in Abram. His address was given as 4 Willow Lane, Abram.
James died at the R.A.E. Infirmary in Wigan at the age of 67, and was buried on January 3rd 1957 in St John the Evangelist churchyard in Abram, in the same grave as his elder brother Thomas. Emily died in 1963 at the age of 69 at Victoria Hospital, Blackpool, and was buried on July 3rd that year in the same grave as James. The address given for Thomas, James and Emily in the burial records was 39 Kingsdown Road, Abram.
