Research Notes

James Edgar born Moffat married first Isabella Scott( who, it is claimed , was a kinswoman of Sir Walter Scott . Isobella died 1850 . James married secondly 1852 , Mary Mossop, on the Duke of Buccleuch's Dumfriesshire estate. He went to Australia to join his brother David in Harrow Victoria.[6]

In the 1851 census[7] James was living at Hillend Eskdale p/Langholm .. He was a widower and his sister Jean was housekeeping for him. With them were:

Isabella 10
John 8
Margaret 3
Adam 1

This brings up the problem , where were Elizabeth, 6 and Jane, 3, who were on the shipping records? There are errors in the shipping records. His wife is down as Isabella. She was dead and he had since married Mary Mossop.[8]

On the same page was George and Jessie Johnstone, with 2 extra children, William 5 and Bessie 6 months.[9]
