Alexander was born in 1736. He was the son of John Edgar. He passed away in 1817.

Alexander was an Admiral in the Royal Navy, having risen through the ranks until retirement in 1799. He was the last living Laird of Wedderlie. Upon his death, his nephew, Thomas Edgar, obtained the grant of the Wedderlie Arms from the Lord Lyon King of Arms.
