James Edgar was a writer [solicitor] in Edinburgh, an honorary Burgess of the city, Extractor in the Court of Session and private clerk or secretary to Sir Gilbert Elliot, the first baronet of that family. It is said that James Edgar's family were Edgars of Peffermyln and Edinburgh but anciently of the family of Edgar of Wedderlie, in Berwickshire.

"He received the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh in 1710 for good services done to it."
