Alexander was born about 1814 as his death certificate shows he was 75 when he died. He was the son of Alexander Edgar. He was living in Benraw when he married Nancy, and the marriage registration noted he was a bachelor. He was working as a carpenter and living in America when his daughter Agnes was born. His son Alexander was present at his death. Alexander made Will No 997 on 5 Jun 1884 as witnessed by Jane Dalzell and Hugh Kelly. The Will Calendar dated 13 Jan 1890 notes he had effects of 103pounds and lived in Benraw at his death on 5 Nov 1889, as proved by Alexander Edgar of Leitrim and Adam Henry Martin of Finnis. The will refers to his eldest son as Alexander Edgar, and also refers to a daughter Eliza Edgar otherwise Martin, a daughter Ann Jane Edgar otherwise Dalzell and a son Samuel Andrew Edgar. There appears to be some family tension as the Will states that he forbid his son Samuel Andrew from withholding the bequeath of a feather bed to the parents in law of his daughter (Ann) Jane Edgar otherwise Dalzell. At the end of the Will it notes Probate was granted on 5 Sep 1890 to Alexander Edgar and Adam Henry Martin.
