Edgar compiled in 1943 . We descend from Dovenald (Donald), second son of Dunegal Dougall MacDowall of Galloway, who was created the 1st Earl of Morton by King David I. The oldest son Rodolph (Randolph) became the 2nd Earl, and Dovenald became the Sheriff of Nithsdale, Dovenald was killed in the Battle of the Standard in 1138. The Sheriffdom passed to his oldest son Edgar, who had been named in honor of King David's older brother, King Edgar. (He, in turn had been named after his uncle , Edgar the Aetheling, younger brother of the Saxon Queen Margaret - Malcolm III's 2nd wife) When our Edgar became Sheriff, he dropped the use of his father's and grandfather's patronym, calling himself simply Edgar, the Sheriff. His branch of the family identified themselves as "of Edgar". About a century later the Edgars fell out of power and most moved south toward Dumfries. By then the Maxwells were rising and many of the Edgars allied with them. Most of the Edgars who remained in upper Nithsdale became farmers and tradespeople. I'm the first known non-farmer in the record of my line, and my youngest son holds it against me..
