Biography

Abigail Edge, daughter of John and Jane Edge, of Providence; married Edward Woodward, son of Richard and Jane of Middletown, husbandman, on 3rd month (May) 24th of 1705..[1][2]

The certificate of marriage is recorded by the Chester Monthly Meeting, and shows that among the witnesses were three Richards, Thomas, William, Joseph and Rachel Woodward..[1][2]

While residing in Middletown, Edward was a member of Providence Meeting; appointed in 1710 as overseer, and in 1717..[1][2]

Children of Edward Woodward and Abigail Edge:.[3]

  1. Margaret, b. 12th mth (Feb), 22, 1705; m. Feb 23, 1731/2 Aaron Vernon, at Providence Meeting
  2. 'Edward, b. 10th mth (Dec) 28, 1707; m. March 21, 1733/4 at Providence Meeting to Sarah Sharpless he died in 1746; and his widow married in 1760 George Gilpin
  3. Abigail, b. 5th mth (July) 24, 1710; m. 10th mth 23, 1730 to Moses Vernon, b. in 1703; brother to Aaron; he died 1767; she died 1795
  4. Mary, b. 6th mth(Aug) 25, 1712; not mentioned in her fathers will in 1754, and probably died unmarried
  5. Hannah, b. 5th month (July) 2, 1715; m. 10th mth (Dec) 11, 1740, at Providence Meeting, to William Hunter, son of John Hunter

Abigail died 9th month 27, 1716[2]

Edward remarried to Alice Allen, widow of John Allen of New town township, and daughter of George and Sarah Smedley[1][4]

Children of Edward Woodward and Alice (Smedley) Allen:[5]

  1. George; died 1757, unmarried; inherited the Homestead in Newtown of 200 acres; bequeathed the same to his sister Jane
  2. Jane; married Nathaniel Newlin, son of John and Mary (Woodward) Newlin
