William Edgerly (1842-1863)
William Edgerly was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1842. His father was coppersmith William Edgerly of Lancaster, and he had a younger brother, George Edgerly, of Lancaster. William lived in the city of Lancaster before enlisting in the 54th Massachusetts on March 19, 1863. He served in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts and was killed in action during the regiment's assault on Fort Wagner outside of Charleston, South Carolina on July 18, 1863. He is buried in Zion Hill Cemetery in Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His grave marker indicating that he is a veteran of the 54th Massachusetts is still intact.

Military Service
Private William Edgerly was Killed in Action during the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 20 years old, single and working as a farmer when he enlisted on 19 March 1863 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was killed in action on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner.[1]
