Biography

Alexander was born in 1798. He was the illegitimate son of Neil Edmonstone and an Indian woman. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states that his mother was an Indian woman whose name is not known.[1] He was given the last name Elmore.[2]

In 1802 he was sent to Scotland, where he was brought up by a friend's sister. He engaged in a career as a merchant in Glasgow.[2]
