Biography

Richard Edols came free to Van Diemen's Land (1826-1856)

1816 - Richard Edols was the 2nd son born on 4 Mar, 1816 in Selworthy, Somerset, England to George Edols and Elizabeth Danger.[1] Note: At the time of recording of the names of of the children of George Edols and Elizabeth Danger in the family bible following their birth, the only child who's name was recorded with a middle name of Dangar was William Dangar Edols.

1816 - Richard was christened on 22 Mar, 1816 at Selworthy, Somerset, England. Their abode shows as Allerford, Selworthy, Somerset, England. [2] [3]

1834 - Richard migrated with his parents, his half uncle Thomas and siblings to Tasmania, Van Diemen's Land departing May arriving in September, 1834[4] on the Thomas Laurie[5] captained by William Langdon.[6] They were reported to be all well on arrival.[7] He was one of 95 passengers.[8] His family settled at Bloomfields, Tasmania and owned the Woolpack Inn.

1841 - Richard seems to have been involved in selling horses. Richard Edols of Lawrenny, Tasmania (selling and breeding horses)[9]

1842 -Richard Edols was still in Lawrenny, Tasmania in 1842.[10] [11]

1843 - The Edols family encountered Bushrangers ""upon the Edol's house near the Woolpack Inn" (Gretna, formerly known as Macquarie Plains)."[12]

1848 - It is possible the Edols family relocated to Victoria from Tasmania in 1848[13] on the Scotia arriving on the 11th October.

1848 -24 Oct 1848 - Cheque stolen in mail notice. Union Bank Portland. [14]

1852- Richard's Marriage to Agnes Dunlop Ross ("Dunrobin", Glenelg River, Victoria) [15].

1853 - Notice regarding stray cattle being impounded on properties of the retreat, Dunrobin and Nungeela Stations. George Carmichael, Richard Edols, W. McPherson. 5 December, 1853.[16]

1854 -28 Mar 1854 - Richard's Son Francis dies at "Dunrobin" [17]

1855 - Richard Edols selling horses in Geelong. This seems to be what Richard Edols was also doing in Tasmania, primarily dealing in horses. [18]

1855 - Richard Edols vs Dewing. Issue regarding horse purchase.[19]

1855 - Richard Edols regarding selling of stolen horse.[20]

1859 - Edols, Richard, North Shore, qualified on an income of 200 pounds per annum. (Leasehold Property)[21]

1860 - Richard Edols deposed.-Am manager for Mr Austin on the North Shore Station. I know the land leased from Mr. Bates. The land was grazed upon by sheep. Was manager for Messrs. Austin and Phillips at the time. I recollect the dissolution in 1856. Our sheep were branded with a horseshoe and water-mark. I do not know of any other sheep being on the run at that time.[22]

1863- Beerik, Victoria[23]

1864 - Coleraine, Victoria[24]

31 May,1867 - Arrived in Melbourne (Hobson's Bay) from Portland via the "Western"[25]

1868 - Richard Edols attended community meeting of settlers and landowners of Casterton and Coleraine area regarding preserving and selling fresh meat to England. [26]

1871- Disposed of land Rocksborough, near Coleraine, Victoria[27]

1871 - Richard was a judge of horses at Belfast Agricultural Show, (Port Fairy area)[28]

1872- Richard Edols, Yallock, Victoria[29]

1873 - Selling cattle at Ballarat, Richard Edols of Yallock[30]

1874 - Richard Edols, Yallock, Victoria[31]

1874- Selling bullocks in Ballarat[32] [33]

1875- Richard purchasing bullocks in Ballarat [34]

1875- Richard Selling all stock from Yallock Station, property sold. (Selling all his prime stock of cattle, sheep, horses, pigs and farming implements) Yallock Station, Garvoc, Near Terang.[35] [36]

Apr, 1876 -Death of Richard's son in Purnim, Victoria, Frank Ross Edols aged 16[37] [38] [39]

1876 - May, 1876 - Richard selling up all furniture and household effects. Relocating to NSW. Residence was adjoining Kavenagh's Bush Inn, Purnim, Victoria. [40]

1876- Richard purchased Burryjaa Station near Corowa NSW Auctioneer's report. We have sold the Burryjaa station, Murrumbidgee district NSW, together with 10,000 sheep, 7 horses, 40 acres of freehold land and effect to Richard Edols at a satisfactory price. See Buraja[41]

1877 - Mar, 1877 - Elected a Sheep Director[42]

1878 - Feb, 1878 - [43]

1878 -April, 1878 - Sheep Director [44]

1878 - April, 1878 - Prize for horse named Saxon. Corowa Agricultural Show.

1878 - Richard's Death[45] from a Buggy accident

1878 - Mental Glimpses from early Corowa. In front of the old fire station (lately demolished (Sanger Street)) the street was much higher, with a cutting or bank on the west side. It was at this point that a serious accident occurred, when the buggy and a pair of horses driven by the late Mr Richard Edols, owner, of. BuraJa Station bolted from across the bushland, over the cutting, causing .the vehicle, to be capsized, Mr. Edols sustained injuries from which he died.[46] [47] [48]
