Mary was born about 1848 in Indiana.
She was the daughter of Malinda and Gustavus Edrington, and the sister of Civil War veteran William Edrington of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color.
