Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
Thomas Edwards is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A129980.

Thomas EDWARDS is a likely son of Dr John Edwards and brother of Andrew EDWARDS.

Andrew Edwards and Thomas Withers were bondsmen on Thomas EDWARDS and Elizabeth Martin's marriage bond. Thomas Withers was a brother-in-law of Elizabeth Cave, Andrew EDWARDS's wife.

All the records that have been found to date are in Fauquier Co, VA or in Buncombe Co, NC. None of the contemporary records that I have found show a middle name for him.

  • Andrew Edwards (c.1723-1788) of Fauquier and Stafford Counties, Virginia is likely a close relative. This is not the same man as Andrew Edwards (1752-1819) from Cumberland County, Virginia, who would have been only 8 years old when an Andrew Edwards was named in the marriage bond of Thomas Edwards in 1760. The other name in the bond is Thomas Withers, who was an in-law of Andrew Edwards of Stafford/Fauquier. See more on this family at the end of this post: [1]l And this [2]

Thomas EDWARDS son, John Columbus EDWARDS supposed to be born in Culpeper Co., VA.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Hi Randy. There seem to be some issues with this profile-- a man born in 1748 (with no birth record or evidence provided) married in 1760 at age 12? Seems very unlikely. I'd like to detach him from thee parents and merge him with his real life counterpart, Thomas Edwards of Buncombe Co. NC (1735-1809) unless some evidence is provided that this person is a real, separate person. Thank you!

If that birth (1735) is about right, I strongly suspect this Thomas Edwards is a son of Dr. John Edwards (d.1743). https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Edwards-2504
posted by Jason F.
Jason, I don't see any evidence or records that would support that. Thomas Edwards does appear to have been related to an Andrew Edwards, because of his marriage bond. I see no connections to the John Edwards family. Do you have any records that would support that?
posted by [Living Yarborough]
There are some connections, yes.

The Andrew Edwards in the marriage bond is Andrew Edwards of Fauquier/Stafford (c.1723-1788) who owned Edwards Tavern in Fauquier Courthouse. He appears in a few records in Overwharton Parish, where several other Edwards relatives lived who definitely had connections to John Edwards of King George. These include Meredith (d.1749) who administered their father's estate in King George in the 1740s, as well as Andrew. Several of the Edwardses of Stafford made appearances in King George County court in the 1740s and 1750s, suggesting a connection with John Edwards. Andrew was among them. This is all straight from the order books of these respective counties.

I make a more in depth case here (towards the end) https://edwardsvirginiagenealogy.blogspot.com/2019/11/a-walk-through-various-errors-in.html

I can't say for sure that Lt. Thomas Edwards is a son of Dr. John Edwards of King George, but since Andrew was likely a son of John, it stands to reason Thomas was as well. Especially, if your birth estimation is correct (1735), that makes Thomas too old to be the son of most of Dr. John's sons. We know he was probably not a son of Ignatius, Uriah or James Edwards because we have wills for all three and no Thomas appears.

The signature of an Andrew Edward's is on Thomas EDWARD's marriage bond dated 1760. Does anyone have a copy of Andrew EDWARD's will dated 1788 in Stafford Co., VA with his signature for comparison?

Was any documentation provided when Thomas' birth location was changed from Fauquier County to Prince William County?
posted by Robin White
I have no idea where Prince William County came from. I can only assume that the person who changed it, was trying to make our Thomas fit into another Edwards tree.
posted by [Living Yarborough]
Robin, Fauquier County was formed from Prince William County in May 1759, and did not exist in 1735.

Thanks for the reply. Good catch!

Thomas Alvin EDWARD must be incorrect. I don't think he married at age 12.

Robin, The thing that I hate about Wiki Tree is that others change your information. You are of course, Correct. Thomas Edwards (no middle name Alvin) was b. c 1736. All the records that I have found for him are in Fauquier Co, VA. Also someone had listed him as the son of an earlier Thomas Edwards & Alice Howell. I have no evidence of this. Thanks for contacting me. I rarely use Wiki anymore.
