Will
Will of John Edwards, 1667 (of Lancaster Co. VA – Wife +3 Children left in England))
Mr. William Ball shall take into his custody all my estate in Virginia and make sale of my lands, houses, servants, cattle, for good bills of Exchange payable in London or good Tobaccoe, and the whole produce to my friend Mr. Spencer Piggott in Duke's Place, London . And what estate of Servants and goods abord the Ship Susan, William Goodlade, Master, I commend to the management of said William Goodlad, to give true account to said Spencer Piggott. And since I left behind me in England my dear wife and three children, what I left with them, as also the produce of my Virginia Estate and the produce of the Ship Susan, be divided into four parts to them equally, and if any depart this life (which God forbid) before the whole be divided, then among the rest. Execuitor Mr. Spencer Piggott of Duke's Place in London. Witnesses: Rich. Perrott, John Page, William Petherbridge, Henry Allen, Rich. Perr.
By researching “Duke’s Place” in London, we find that Spencer Piggott of Duke’s Place is actually in Stepney, Middlesex County, England (outskirts of London). John’s uncle, Robert Edwards, son of Thomas Edwards and Katherine Crosse, [and Sarah Gore’s husband], was also in London as a Merchant and an Alderman’s Deputy in 1634]].
John and Robert obviously knew each other in London as John picked up the trade and disappears from English records by 1642. Robert Edwards’ Will was probated in 1642 and in it he lists his mercantile company, “Merchant Adventurers” and names his son, Robert “Secretary”. Robert-1642 was involved heavily in trade with the colony and the looming Civil War between Cromwell and the Royalists in England. His loyalty appears to be with the Crown. On 12, December 1634, Robert was reimbursed by the Burgess Council of Wisbech “for moneys expended by him about the Toune Buissness upon his journey to London concerning the King’s Ma~ties shipping, viijll 2s 4d.”
This falls in line with his actions eleven years earlier, in 1623, Robert Edwards informed Virginia Company officials he would send his surplus commodities to Virginia. Sir Edwin Sandys is Treasurer of the Virginia Company and George Sandys is Treasurer of the Jamestown Colony during this time.John Edwards, son of John Edwards and Agnes Scortred, first appears in James City County, Virginia in 1642. He is leasing land, along with Christian Williams.
