Biography

Thomas J. Edwards, son of Samuel and Catharine Berg Edwards, was born in Ashland County, Ohio, April 22, 1863, being at his death 60 years, 9 months, and 6 days of age.

During his early life his parents moved to Nixon Township, Dewitt County, where he spent the greater part of his life. He was married to Miss Martha Smallwood of Lane, Illinois August 5, 1886.

Mr. and Mrs. Edwards began farming near Clinton, Illinois residing on that farm eleven years, after which he moved to Nixon Township, where he remained until ten years ago, when the family moved to the farm near Birkbeck, Illinois. In addition to being a farmer, he was engaged, a great deal of the time, in the stock buying business and attained a wide aquaintanceship.

Beside the widow he leaves six children, Bonnie Shinneman, Clifford Edwards, Annie Larry, Fern Robinson, Icy Person, and Samuel Edwards. One son, Edgar, died in 1918, and one son, Smith, died in 1910. One child also died in infancy. He also leaves 19 grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Ella Baker, George Edwards, Louis Edwards and Archer Edwards.

Mr Edwards became a member of the United Brethren Church at Center Chapel many years ago. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Modern Woodmen and had always been affiliated with the Republican Party.
