Biography

Harriet Emma Edwards preferred to go by her middle name. She was born in Washington County, OH to Edwards-16853 and Webber-3482 in the autumn of 1860.

Emma was a school teacher and lived with her parents in Independence, Ohio prior to her marriage. In 1887, a month before her 27th birthday, she married George Paynter, age 30, who also grew-up and lived in Washington County. They had their first child, a daughter Etta the following year. They would add three more daughters and a son.

Sometime between 1900 and 1908, George and Emma divorced. George Paynter married Minnie Davis in West Virginia in 1908 and fathered a child with her in 1909. Emma moved with her daughters, Laura and Faith to Coshocton, Ohio prior to 1910. She lived there the remainder of her life.

Sometime between 1930 and 1934, when she was in her early 70's she married Harmon Hackthorn, a local widower, whose wife had died in 1929. Harmon was in his mid 70s. In the 1934 Coshocton City Directory, Harmon and Emma Hackthorn are listed as living at 913 S. Lawn Avenue in Coshocton, OH.

Emma died in December, 1935. Harmon passed away in 1941. They are buried together in South Lawn Cemetery in Coshocton, OH.

Research Notes

• Multiple Emma Hackathorns in Ohio: In the 1930 and 1940 US Census, there is a woman named Emma Hackathorn, living with a Virgina Vixby in the Cleveland area. This is not the Emma Edwards born in 1860 that is the subject of this profile. There is also no close family relation between Virginia Vixby and the subject of this profile.
