John was born into the family of Joseph and Amy Edwards and was baptised on 25 August 1811 . Baptism records show that Joseph and Amy had already baptised 3 children prior to John's birth into their family and another 6 after John. These were Joseph on 20 Sept 1806, Amy on 31 July 1808, William in August 1809, Margaret on 30 May 1813, Elizabeth on 30 Oct 1814, Sarah on 13 Oct 1816, Thomas on 9 Aug 1818, Amelia on 11 Feb 1820, and Mercy on 18 May 1822. John married Catherine Crick in the parish of Dymchurch in the County of Kent on 28 May 1833. John's signature is on the marriage register, however Catherine only has a mark, indicating she was not literate at the time of their marriage. Joseph Edwards' mark is on the marriage register as a witness - this could be John's father or brother. Elizabeth Edwards signed as second witness - probably John's sister. Dymchurch Parish registers show baptisms of 2 children of John and Catherine - Mary on 6 Oct 1822 (at which time John is employed as a labourer), John on 12 July 1835 (also showing John as employed as a labourer).Thomas was baptised at Aldington on 27 May 1839. At this time the family were recorded in the parish register as living at Newington and John was again working as a labourer. Dymchurch parish register records the baptism of Joseph on 17 October 1841, and their abode at this time is Orgarswick and John is working as a labourer. The Census of June1841 shows John and Catherine Edwards living in West Hythe in Kent. In addition to the 3 children listed above, they also had a 4 year old daughter Aime. The "Ganges" sailed from Plymouth, England on 10 March 1842 and arrived at Port Jackson, Australia on 25 June 1842. On board were John Edwards and his wife and 4 children. John is described as a shepherd and was coming to Australia to work for the Australian Agricultural Company for an annual salary of 25 pounds.
