Biography

"Tryon Edwards (7 August 1809, Hartford, Conn.; 4 January 1894, Detroit, Mich.) was an American theologian, best known for compiling A Dictionary of Thoughts, a book of quotations. He published the works of Jonathan Edwards (the younger) in 1842. He also compiled and published the sixteen sermons of his great grandfather, Jonathan Edwards, on 1 Corinthians 13, the "Love Chapter", titling the book Charity And Its Fruits; Christian love as manifested in the heart and life, which was thought by some to be the most thorough analysis of the text of 1 Corinthians 13 ever written. An original quote of Tryon Edwards is: “Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny.” ~ Tryon Edwards

"He was minister of the Second Congregational Church in New London, Connecticut, from 1845-1857, after having served in Rochester, New York."[1]

He studied at Yale University from 1824 to 1827.[2]

He married Catherine Holker Brien (née Hughes), youngest daughter of Samuel Hughes and Catherine ____, of Maryland on 29 May 1843 in Philadelphia.[3]

They had three children.

Education and work: Entered Yale College 1824, graduated 1828. Studied theology at Princeton, 1830–33. Licensed to preach by the Presbytery of New York, 1833. Ordained and installed over First Presbyterian Church, Rochester, N. Y., July 22, 1832; resigned that charge in 1844. Installed pastor of Second Congregational Church, New London, Conn., March 6, 1845. Resigned that charge August 4, 1857. Installed pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, Md., April 20, 1867. [4]

Notes

This tree indicates his mother as Elizabeth Tryon (entered as Tyrone), daugher of Moses: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:S1TW-5X2

We have an entry for her already indicates married name of Edwards, I am connecting her on that basis.

Based on newspaper items, he was a reverend, though in what church it is not said. Typical is:

[Marriages] At Rochester, on the 9th inst. by the Rev. Tryon Edwards, Rev. Eli Smith, missionary at Beyroot, in Syria, to Miss Maria Ward, eldest daughter of the Hon. Moses Chapin of that city.[5] Another article from that period makes it plain that the Rev. Tryon Edwards was active in Rochester, NY at least in the early part of that decade.
