Biography

Elizabeth Petworth was born to Sophia Petworth around 1834 in Bramshott, Hampshire England.[1]
She sailed to Australia as an assisted immigrant aboard the Anglo Saxon[1], arriving Oct 1854, where her calling was listed as a general servant and where she listed her father as James Petworth, her mother's husband.[2]
In 1855 Elizabeth Petwork married Robert Smith in Cook's River, New South Wales, Australia.[3]
In 1856, possibly still married to Robert Smith, Elizabeth married James Franks in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.[4]
On 7 July 1856 and again on 9 July 1856 her husband James Franks advertised in the Sydney Morning Herald that Elizabeth had abandoned him and that he was not responsible for whatever debts she might incur from that point forward.[5]
Two years and five months later, on Christmas Day 1858, now going by the name Elizabeth Edwards, she married William Henry Cooper at O'Brien's Bridge, Tasmania, Australia[6], a presumably bigamous marriage.
In 1861 friends in England paid for a listing in the Freeman's Journal in Sydney enquiring about the missing Elizabeth Petworth.[7] Later that month they posted the same search in Sydney's Empire.[8]
In 1861 the Government Immigration Office ran an advertisement in the Sydney Morning Herald asking for assistance in locating Elizabeth Petworth.[9]
On the birth record of her fourth child, Charles Henry Cooper, in Hobart, Tasmania, in 1865, Elizabeth listed her maiden name as Petworth. [10] This same record also shows her to be illiterate, signing her name with an 'X'.[11]
Elizabeth died on 15 June 1897 in Moonah, Tasmania, Australia.[12] and was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Newtown.

Edwards-42608 and Petworth-1 appear to represent the same person because: Same son Alfred. Petworth-1 is well sourced, and it appears from the sources on there, that Petworth is the correct Last Name at Birth. Thanks for reviewing.
