John Edwards passed away before 16 March 1801.[1]
John is purported to be buried in Edwards Family Cemetery in Greenville County, South Carolina.[13]
This John Edwards (abt.1727-bef.1801), who left a Will in Greenville County, South Carolina, in 1799, is often conflated with the John Edwards (1727-) of the Edwards Heir Scam.[14]
Not His Parents: The identity of a John Edwards (1727-) as a son of Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Sr (1690-1781) and Isabelle (Downing) Edwards comes from the grafting of a fictional John Edwards onto family trees of real people named Edwards to promote a scam in the early 20th century - the Edwards Heirs scam.[14] The profile of that John Edwards (1727-) has an Uncertain Existence research note box.
This John Edwards (abt.1727-bef.1801) was described as an "orphan boy" [presumably the same person] in an April 1744 order of the Prince William County Court, which is impossible if his father - purportedly Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Sr (1690-1781) - was still living.[14]
In the Timeline, note events are listed between 1743 Mar 28 and 1744 Apr 23 in which John Edwards is witnessing multiple legal transactions, while also being an orphan. This doesn't seem likely. Spratlin-29 04:32, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
Birth
John's birth date is estimated from his marriage date, (about 1751 - 24 years)=about 1727. His birth place is unknown. His parents are unknown (see Unknown Origins below).
He is believed to be the "orphan boy" of the 23 April 1744 record (see Records, above). He would be referred to as an orphan if his father was dead and he was under 21, which means that he was not yet 21 on that date and, therefore, born after 23 April 1723.
Considering that this John is believed to be the same John who sold land in 1791, and men had to be "of age" to sell land, he was born before 1770.
An unsourced birth of 10 Feb 1727 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales, was previously listed. This birth date and place is associated with the John Edwards (1727-) of the Edwards Heir Scam.[14] Spratlin-29 18:26, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
Marriage
Family accounts suggest that by the time of his marriage in 1751, John Edwards lived in the section of Prince William County, Virginia, which broke off into Fauquier County in 1759. However, a John Edwards appears in the Tithables List of Prince William County in 1765.[15]
John Edwards was very likely an older brother of Gerrard, James and Samuel Edwards of Prince William County and Fauquier County, Virginia. This family's origin is unknown, but associations in Fauquier suggest they may have been from Richmond County, Virginia. See the evidence: "Identifying Gerrard Edwards of Fauquier County, Virginia".
The Sources list includes Memory Aldridge Lester's book Old Southern Bible Records.[2][3] Two Edwards family Bibles are abstracted there:
Below are these two abstracts verbatim from the 1974 edition. The 1962 and 1974 editions agree in the names of the children and their birth dates. Lester apparently provides compiler notes in parentheses "(…)" in the 1962 edition and brackets "[…]" in the 1974 edition. These notes presumably are sourced from other than the family Bibles, but if so, those sources are not provided.
Observations:
[These more properly belong in the profiles of the respective children. Spratlin-29 21:23, 13 August 2023 (UTC)]
This list compiles information from various sources about his children:
The names and birthdates of his children were reportedly written in an old account book belonging to John Edwards and submitted by a descendant of his in Greenville. They were all reportedly born in Fauquier County, Virginia, though prior to 1759, this was in Prince William County.[16]
The DAR sources listed here (13 Aug 2023) need to be reviewed for accuracy and that they are correctly cited here for the facts reliably sourced. At least two of the DAR person profiles have warnings on them cautioning about their use. Spratlin-29 21:23, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
The DAR record of John Edwards, who was purportedly born 1727 in Wales and died before 16 March 1801, Greenville District, South Carolina,[17] has the following Notice:
The DAR record of son Joseph has the following Notice:[18]
The 1800 Census for Greenville, South Carolina[21] shows a John Edwards head of household, aged 45 or older, with 6 women (one aged 45 or older, four "of twenty-six and under 45", one 16-25), and 6 slaves.[20]
Given what is known of this John's family, the older John in the census is most likley him and his wife (born by c1735 to be aged 45+ in 1800), although none of the other women are old enough to be their daughters (26-44 = born between c1736 and c1774; 16-25 = born between c1775 and c1784). Perhaps they are grandchildren, children of his son John, of whom the Will says "Supposing John Edwards never should come..." - meaning he was not there in September 1799.
On page 262, there appear a John Edwards and a William Edwards (neither household had any slaves).[20] John is perhaps a grandson (this John's son John was born in 1757); William is probably his son.
The following household, found on the page before John Sr., is probably not his son, considering the number and ages of younger members in the household.[22]
The previous page (two pages before John Sr.) is likely his son Joseph.[23]
The 1800 Census[21] shows that the elder John's household included six slaves.[20] John's 1799 Will includes bequests of six people to his children:
John's patriotic service (furnished supplies) was performed in Fauquier County, Virginia.[17] His DAR record shows his wife as Henrietta and his children as Joseph (married Mary) and John Jr. (married Sarah "Sally" O'Neil). Note - the only children listed by the DAR are those who have a descendant that joined DAR based on their relationship to the patriot ancestor through that child.
John's son Joseph has a DAR record with the comment that it could not be verified "that he really served in any capacity", referencing R13943 (the transcription of which includes a note that his "claim was not allowed because service as a waggoner in the militia was not construed as military service by the Pension Office, contrary to its own regulations"). Joseph states in his pension application of 14 October 1833 that he was born 1 or 2 February 1754 in Fauquier County, Virginia and that he "has lived in Greenville District South Carolina where he now lives, ever since the Revolutionary War."[18][25]

The link to the person profile on FamilySearch that was added on 23 April along with the prior date/place change has now been labeled in the See also sources as unreliable as it reflects the Edwards Heirs Scam.
It appears no reliable source for the birth date/place was contained in the biography, research notes, or sources. I changed the date to an estimated year based on his marriage, and deleted the unsourced place. A research note has been added documenting the unsourced date/place that was removed.

Hi Southern Colonies Project! I've been following up on postponed merges and I just shifted the unmerged match with the fictional Edwards-11785 to be a rejected match. However, the text for that profile was developed and gave it a "real" feeling. I just copied the text from it to this profile (as hidden text) and intend to update this profile by merging the existing text with that from Edwards-11785 (and then revising Edwards-11785 to better portray the fictional John).
