Often Conflated with Edwards Heirs Scam

This John Edwards (abt.1727-bef.1801), who left a Will in Greenville County, South Carolina, in 1799, is often conflated with the John Edwards (1727-) of the Edwards Heir Scam.[14]

Not His Parents: The identity of a John Edwards (1727-) as a son of Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Sr (1690-1781) and Isabelle (Downing) Edwards comes from the grafting of a fictional John Edwards onto family trees of real people named Edwards to promote a scam in the early 20th century - the Edwards Heirs scam.[14] The profile of that John Edwards (1727-) has an Uncertain Existence research note box.

This John Edwards (abt.1727-bef.1801) was described as an "orphan boy" [presumably the same person] in an April 1744 order of the Prince William County Court, which is impossible if his father - purportedly Thomas Nathaniel Edwards Sr (1690-1781) - was still living.[14]

Conflated?

In the Timeline, note events are listed between 1743 Mar 28 and 1744 Apr 23 in which John Edwards is witnessing multiple legal transactions, while also being an orphan. This doesn't seem likely. Spratlin-29 04:32, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

Vital Statistics

Birth
John's birth date is estimated from his marriage date, (about 1751 - 24 years)=about 1727. His birth place is unknown. His parents are unknown (see Unknown Origins below).

He is believed to be the "orphan boy" of the 23 April 1744 record (see Records, above). He would be referred to as an orphan if his father was dead and he was under 21, which means that he was not yet 21 on that date and, therefore, born after 23 April 1723.

Considering that this John is believed to be the same John who sold land in 1791, and men had to be "of age" to sell land, he was born before 1770.

An unsourced birth of 10 Feb 1727 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales, was previously listed. This birth date and place is associated with the John Edwards (1727-) of the Edwards Heir Scam.[14] Spratlin-29 18:26, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

Marriage
Family accounts suggest that by the time of his marriage in 1751, John Edwards lived in the section of Prince William County, Virginia, which broke off into Fauquier County in 1759. However, a John Edwards appears in the Tithables List of Prince William County in 1765.[15]

Unknown Origins

John Edwards was very likely an older brother of Gerrard, James and Samuel Edwards of Prince William County and Fauquier County, Virginia. This family's origin is unknown, but associations in Fauquier suggest they may have been from Richmond County, Virginia. See the evidence: "Identifying Gerrard Edwards of Fauquier County, Virginia".

Family Bibles

The Sources list includes Memory Aldridge Lester's book Old Southern Bible Records.[2][3] Two Edwards family Bibles are abstracted there:

  • John Edwards Sr. Bible
  • Joseph Edwards Bible

Below are these two abstracts verbatim from the 1974 edition. The 1962 and 1974 editions agree in the names of the children and their birth dates. Lester apparently provides compiler notes in parentheses "(…)" in the 1962 edition and brackets "[…]" in the 1974 edition. These notes presumably are sourced from other than the family Bibles, but if so, those sources are not provided.

Observations:

  • The information that John immigrated from Wales is bracketed, and therefore not sourced from the Bible.
  • Sarah did not die young as she is named in John's 1799 Will.
  • A daughter Nancy, born c.1761, (see Sources for Children) is NOT listed.

Possible Additional Sources for Children

[These more properly belong in the profiles of the respective children. Spratlin-29 21:23, 13 August 2023 (UTC)]

This list compiles information from various sources about his children:

The names and birthdates of his children were reportedly written in an old account book belonging to John Edwards and submitted by a descendant of his in Greenville. They were all reportedly born in Fauquier County, Virginia, though prior to 1759, this was in Prince William County.[16]

DAR Sources

The DAR sources listed here (13 Aug 2023) need to be reviewed for accuracy and that they are correctly cited here for the facts reliably sourced. At least two of the DAR person profiles have warnings on them cautioning about their use. Spratlin-29 21:23, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

The DAR record of John Edwards, who was purportedly born 1727 in Wales and died before 16 March 1801, Greenville District, South Carolina,[17] has the following Notice:

Problems have been discovered with at least one previously verified paper - see ancestor's full record.
FAMPCL-Maiden name of Mary, wife of son Joseph, has not been proven. See DATACF and Joseph Edwards A036723. 3/2015.[17]

The DAR record of son Joseph has the following Notice:[18]

Future applicants must prove correct service.
1) R13943, his claim for wagoneer service.
2) Cannot verify that he really served in any capacity. See DATACF.
3) Alternate ancestor if father, John Edwards Sr, A036689.

Analysis of 1800 Census

The 1800 Census for Greenville, South Carolina[21] shows a John Edwards head of household, aged 45 or older, with 6 women (one aged 45 or older, four "of twenty-six and under 45", one 16-25), and 6 slaves.[20]

Given what is known of this John's family, the older John in the census is most likley him and his wife (born by c1735 to be aged 45+ in 1800), although none of the other women are old enough to be their daughters (26-44 = born between c1736 and c1774; 16-25 = born between c1775 and c1784). Perhaps they are grandchildren, children of his son John, of whom the Will says "Supposing John Edwards never should come..." - meaning he was not there in September 1799.

Household of John Edwards, Sr.
  • 1 free white man aged 45+ (born by c1735): John Edwards
  • 1 free white woman aged 45+ (born by c1735): Henrietta
  • 4 free white women 26-44 (c1736 - c1774)
  • 1 free white woman aged 16-25 (c1775 - c1784)
  • 6 slaves

On page 262, there appear a John Edwards and a William Edwards (neither household had any slaves).[20] John is perhaps a grandson (this John's son John was born in 1757); William is probably his son.

Household of John Edwards [III?]
  • 1 free white male 16-25 (born c1775 - c1784): John Edwards
  • 1 free white femail 16-15 (born 1775 - c1784): probably his wife
  • 1 free white female under 10 (born c1790-1800): probably his daughter
Household of William Edwards
  • 1 free white male 26-45 (born c1736 - c1774): William Edwards born 1768[2][3]
  • 1 free white female 26-45 (born c1736 - c1774): probably his wife
  • 3 free white males under 10 (born c1790-1800): probably sons
  • 1 free white female under 10 (born c1790-1800): probably his daughter

The following household, found on the page before John Sr., is probably not his son, considering the number and ages of younger members in the household.[22]

Household of (another) William Edwards
  • 1 free white male 45+ (born c1736-c1774): William Edwards
  • 3 white males under 10
  • 2 white males 10-15
  • 1 white male 16-25
  • 1 white female under 10
  • 1 white female 10-15
  • 1 white female 16-25

The previous page (two pages before John Sr.) is likely his son Joseph.[23]

Household of Joseph Edwards
  • 1 free white male 26-44 (born c1736 - c1774): Joseph Edwards born 1754[2][3]
  • 1 free white female 26-44: probably his wife
  • 4 free white males under 10: one may be Thomas, born 1791[24]
  • 1 free white male 10-15
  • 1 free white female 10-15
  • 1 slave [faint, but looks like a 1]

Enslaved People

The 1800 Census[21] shows that the elder John's household included six slaves.[20] John's 1799 Will includes bequests of six people to his children:

  • Sarah, a negro girl (to Lucy)
  • Jack, a negro boy (to William)
  • Hannah, a negro woman (to Elizabeth)
  • Leroy, a negro boy (to Mary)
  • Thornton, a negro boy (to son Joseph)
  • Carrie, a negro girl (to son John)

Patriotic Service

John's patriotic service (furnished supplies) was performed in Fauquier County, Virginia.[17] His DAR record shows his wife as Henrietta and his children as Joseph (married Mary) and John Jr. (married Sarah "Sally" O'Neil). Note - the only children listed by the DAR are those who have a descendant that joined DAR based on their relationship to the patriot ancestor through that child.

John's son Joseph has a DAR record with the comment that it could not be verified "that he really served in any capacity", referencing R13943 (the transcription of which includes a note that his "claim was not allowed because service as a waggoner in the militia was not construed as military service by the Pension Office, contrary to its own regulations"). Joseph states in his pension application of 14 October 1833 that he was born 1 or 2 February 1754 in Fauquier County, Virginia and that he "has lived in Greenville District South Carolina where he now lives, ever since the Revolutionary War."[18][25]

  24. From a DAR descendant's record (which needs collaboration), Joseph's son Thomas is said to have been born in Virginia in 1791 - the same record has Agnes, Thomas's wife, as born in 1785, which would be unusual for the time (for a woman to be 6 years older than her husband). ~ DAR descendant record for Thomas, a son of Joseph Edwards (DAR Patriot Ancestor #A036723), accessed 20 April 2022.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

The birth date and place was edited yet again to reflect a date/place associated with the Edwards Heirs Scam. This change was not collaborated.

The link to the person profile on FamilySearch that was added on 23 April along with the prior date/place change has now been labeled in the See also sources as unreliable as it reflects the Edwards Heirs Scam.

It appears no reliable source for the birth date/place was contained in the biography, research notes, or sources. I changed the date to an estimated year based on his marriage, and deleted the unsourced place. A research note has been added documenting the unsourced date/place that was removed.

Please review US Southern Colonies Project Editing Guidance before editing. Reliable sources are required.

The birth date and place were edited without source on 23 April 2023 from 1727 in Virginia to 1727-02-10 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. A FamilySearch tree was added to the sources at the same time, but the relationship between the birth date and place edit and the source was not stated in the edit.

It is noted that the FamilySearch tree appears to contain the same parents as described in the research note regarding the Edwards Heirs Scam.

this profile and the other have been edited to clarify the situation

Hi Southern Colonies Project! I've been following up on postponed merges and I just shifted the unmerged match with the fictional Edwards-11785 to be a rejected match. However, the text for that profile was developed and gave it a "real" feeling. I just copied the text from it to this profile (as hidden text) and intend to update this profile by merging the existing text with that from Edwards-11785 (and then revising Edwards-11785 to better portray the fictional John).

Cheers, Liz

Hello, please do not attach this man to the fictitious Thomas Nathaniel Edwards family. That connection has been thoroughly debunked. Thank you!

Edwards-8423 and Edwards-9084 appear to represent the same person because: These two men definitely represent the same person who lived in Fauquier County Virginia in the mid-18th century and died in Greenville Co., SC, husband of Henrietta Ayers, as indicated by Fauquier County deeds. Open to discuss parentage/children/etc. but I'm working to fix decades worth of damage done by fabrications in the "Edwards Heirs" newsletters currently and consolidating these profiles is an important part of that. If you have an objection, please message me. Thanks!

Edwards-14938 and Edwards-8423 appear to represent the same person because: The John Edwards of Greenville Co., SC (d. 1799-1801) has been assigned to a probably fictitious couple (Thomas Nathaniel Edwards and Elizabeth Dowling), though evidence suggests he was more likely a son of John Edwards of Jane Arrington of Westmoreland Co., VA. The latter parents had several well-documented relatives in the vicinity, including brother Thomas Edwards of Prince William County and a son, Andrew Edwards, proprietor of Edwards Tavern in Fauquier Court House (formed from Prince William in 1759). John Edwards was described as an "orphan boy" in Prince William orders in April 1744; this makes sense because his father, John, had died in King George County in late 1743 and he was an "orphan" because he was not yet age 21 (he would have been around 17 or 18 years old). John Edwards jr. sold his property in Fauquier Co. in 1791 and moved to SC, where he wrote his will in 1799. So I am initiating this merge to clear up the misconception that he is a son of "Thomas Nathaniel Edwards."

Edwards-8925 and Edwards-8423 do not represent the same person because: Ted's research shows this is a different man, who died in 1819 in Lincoln Co., NC

There is a conflict here with another John Edwards (Edwards-8423) who died in Greenville SC. This profile either needs to be merged with Edwards-8423 since they are evidently the same person, or the death date/place for this John Edwards should be removed.

Unless anyone objects, I'd like to unlink this profile from Thomas Nathaniel Edwards and link him to his correct parents, John Edwards and Jane Arrington of Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Hey Mickey,

I am working on the source-a-thon and Greenville SC connections that are unsourced. Hope to add sources and info.
