Biography

Nathaniel was born in 1822. He was the owner of Anchor Shipping line, a politician in 1862, a member Provincial Council, Nelson City, and a member of Parliament CBB.

He married Anne Augusta Nicholas Laking on 13 August 1855.[1]

Victoria University writes: The Hon. Nathaniel Edwards, who was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1872, was a member up to the time of his death in 1880; and, before his appointment to the Council, sat as a member of the House of Representatives, He arrived in Nelson in January, 1845, by the ship “Slams Castle,” and afterwards joined the Government survey staff, and was engaged in surveying the Awatere district. Mr. Edwards subsequently acquired the business of Messrs Fell and Seymour, general merchants, and taking into partnership Messrs George Bennett and John Symons, carried on the business under the style of N. Edwards and Co. This firm founded the Anchor line of steamers and the branch business of Edwards, Bennett and Co., at Christchurch. Mr. Edwards died at Nelson in 1880.

Wikipedia page: Nathaniel Edwards was born in 1822 in Derbyshire, England. His parents were solicitor William Edwards and his wife Mary Ann (née Allen). He arrived in Nelson in January 1845 on the Slams Castle from London, England as partner in the firm of Nattrass and Edwards, along with machinery for a flax-dressing mill. This machinery was set up in the swamps of the Wakapuaka flats, but the experiments proved unsuccessful and ended in 1846. With this failure Edwards was thrown upon his own resources and he worked with surveyors Joseph Ward and Cyrus Goulter in the Wairau. He was still working as a surveyor on 12 September 1855 when he married in Nelson to 20-year-old Annie Augusta Nicholas Laking, daughter of Dr and Mrs Laking of Waimea West. They had 12 children.[2]

His wife, seemingly, died in England.[3]

Nathaniel died in Nelson on 15 July 1880.[4]
