Thomas was born in 1882[1] in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England. His father had died by 1891, when he lived with his mother, Emma, and siblings at Chorlton Cottages in the parish of Stanghow, Yorkshire.[2]
At the time of the 1901 census, Thomas worked as a carter on the Lancaster family's farm at Newland in the parish of Eastrington, Yorkshire.[3] In 1911 he lived with his sister, Elizabeth, and her family in Stanghow, and worked as an ironstone miner.[4]
