Biography

Meredith Edwards was transported to Maryland by John Filer of Bristol, England in October 1675. In October 1694, he and a probable brother, John Edwards, bought land in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Another possible brother, Robert Edwards, had been living in Westmoreland since at least 1668, and died in 1682.

In his will (1712), Meredith Edwards divided his real estate equally between his three sons John, William and Thomas Edwards. His wife Ann and daughter Eleanor are also named. John and Thomas can be found in several records of Spotsylvania County from 1722 to 1745, though John appeared to have settled in King George as early as 1723; William also lived in King George before returning to Westmoreland by 1733; Thomas may have settled in Prince William County by 1746.

This appears to be the progenitor of the Edwards family in Virginia. I was asked to add the US Southern Colonies Project as manager and to add project protection to the profile for Thomas Nathaniel Edwards... I did that, but working on cleaning up his profile reveals that he is probably better managed by the Disproven Existence Project. I'm still working on cleaning up his profile, but with that goal (to transfer management to the Disproven Existence Project) in mind. I would like to refer people looking for colonial Virginia Edwards to this profile from that one, but I would feel better doing that if this profile were PPP (project-protected profile) and co-managed by the US Southern Colonies Project (to support PPP - all protected profiles must have a project as a manger). If no objections, I'll do that (add PPP/the project).

Thanks!

Sounds good to me, thanks. I also added the larger book on this family (some overlap with the blog post) but this has far more sourcing. https://archive.org/details/the-descendants-of-meredith-edwards-of-westmoreland-county-virginia/page/1/mode/2up

Had anyone tried researching his probable Welsh origins? Edwards may be considered an English name, but I've seen the surname in Wales and Ireland. I believe he has Welsh origins based on his given name, Meredith. Originally a man's name, its Welsh spelling was something like Meredudd. The "dd" in Welsh is pronounced "th."

I have a bit in the British National Archives online, haven't come up with anything so far.
