Biography

Orlando was born between 1823/1825. He passed away in 1893/8. He was likely the son of Daniel Edwards (1790-1870) and Sarah "Polly" Sweezey (1790-1850) ; data not solidly corroborated to date, so no parents are linked at this time.

Daniel 1790-1870 is buried at Union Cemetery in the same family plot as Orlando.

There is an Augustus Edwards b. 1818, d. 1890 in the same family plot as Orlando and nearly all his children, at Union Cemetery. Possibly his brother.

He married 1st in 1847 to Ruth Elmira Davis; she died 1850.

He married 2nd before 1857 to Mary F. Davis (Daughter of Burgess Davis and Mary Finch Norton?) Their children are:

Notes

According to the Swasey Family source below: Sally Swasey b. abt. 1795, m. in 1820 Daniel Edwards of Middle Island. They had (1) Augustus Edwards 1823; (2) Orlando Edwards 1825, and (3) Jehiel Edwards 1827. Orlando m. 1st in 1847 Almira Davis, who died 1848. He married 2nd to Miss ___ Davis.

According to Longwood School genealogical site: He married Ruth Elmira ("Almira") Davis. Their children are:

1. George Orlando Edwards ^[1]
2. Roswell F. Edwards b.26 Dec 1865, d. 1959; (FaG #26547532)m. Eloise Loper, Port Jefferson.
3. Franklin M. Edwards 1870-1907; did not marry

Union Cemetery records state that "EDWARDS, ORLANDO, was born in 1824 and died in Middle Island in 1893 age 70. He married Ruth Elmira Davis the daughter of Samuel and Ruth Norton Davis, they had a son, George."

Since the burial of Ruth Davis is dated 11 Nov 1850, and is inscribed "Wife of Orlando F. Edwards 26 yrs" it is clear that the supposed children of the couple are incorrect. The three children are likely of his second wife "Miss Davis", ancestry unknown.

It appears that historical records may in fact have conflated a first wife Ruth Davis (1824-1850) with a second wife Almira Davis, the mother of some of all of his children. Note that the interment of Ruth does not mention a middle name at all.
