John was born in 1718 in Bristol, England, the son of John Edwards and Unknown Schoppens, and by the records found, he lived out his life there in Bristol.
In 1739 John married Sarah Holford and they had two children before she died in 1742. A year later, on July 21, 1743, he married Ann Manship in Saint Anne's Church, Westminster, London, England, United Kingdom. John and Ann would have one child.
John was a businessman, possibly in shipping through the busy port of Bristol, and evidently built up a fortune since his daughter, Frances, was said to have inherited enough money from her father to probably be the source of the Fremantle family’s wealth, which enabled them to rise up in society.
John's death was on March 17, 1747. He would have been 29 years old. It is said he died through catching an illness at the trial of the Jacobite rebel Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat.
