John was born in the early to mid-1770s, estimated at 1775. He was the son of Edward Edwards and Agnes "Nancy" (maiden name unknown) Edwards, of Chatham County, North Carolina.
There is a well documented record of the descendants of John and Sarah [Hackney] Edwards, including some information on Sarah's Hackney side.[1]
Marriage and Children
John Edwards married Sarah Hackney in Chatham County, North Carolina in about 1796. They had at least the following nine children, who were named in a document filed in the Probate of John Edwards. The document dated Tuesday December 24, 1833 is a petition to the court by Eaton Edwards to not divide the 49 acre inheritance from John Edwards, deceased. Heirs were Eaton, Aaron, Green, Stokes, Seth Hackney and wife Frances, Lewis Patterson and wife Mary, Peter Patterson and wife Sally, William Howard and wife Rebecca, Richard Mount and wife Nancy, and Sarah Edwards the widow. However, the Court referenced "eleven distributes," (See image) one was apparently inadvertently omitted and believed to be Jarrot William Edwards (b. 18 Jan 1817 per tombstone), who was later appointed guardian of the children of Stokes Edwards and Green Edwards.
John and his wife Sarah Hackney Edwards moved from Chatham County, North Carolina to Wilson County, TN in about 1802, and settled in the Hurricane Creek area of Wilson County. Their descendants can still be found near the site about 5 miles west of Norene on the north side of Cedar Forest Road.
He passed away in 1833, intestate, as stated above. Although there doesn't seem to be a marked grave, John Edwards is said to be buried in Old Edwards Cemetery in Wilson County, Tennessee. [2]
