Biography

The following is an interim compilation of sourced facts and text which would benefit from a review once an additional records search has been done for the purpose of detecting further information that could be included in his bio.

Origin

There were two Rice Edwards of mid 17th c. Massachusetts Bay. This profile is for Rice Edwards who was in Salem, Mass as early as 1642. [1] H emigrated to Beverly in 1642 He was a joiner (a finish carpenter, cabinetmaker).[2] He was admitted to the Church in Boston, 9 May 1647. [1]

Marriage(s)

The following two marriage records are sequentially presented in the Torry source (pg.244)

Edwards, Rice m 1st wf Eleanor, b. abt 1640 (deposed 1680, ae 40); b. 1680, Boston/Salem [3]

Edwards, Rice m. 2nd Joan (1620-adm 1647, Boston); b 1647, b. 26 Dec 1643 [3] "He m. Joan" [4]

Death

Rice Edwards passed away in 1683, Beverly, MA.[2] Source Cutter's bibliographies, pg 1326, states "he died before 15 Jun 1683 when his children made an agreement concerning the settling of the estate."[5]

But the name of these 3 sons (John, Thomas, Benjamin) appear to have belonged to the Rice Edwards of Ipswich/ Wentham, Essex county, Mass. Does this mean this specific death date of 15 Jun 1683 actually belonged to Rice Edwards of Ipswich/Wenham?

Children

He might have had a daughter named Sarah.

If you read Mr. Kenney's thoroughly documented research it's clear there are two Rice Edwards: Rice of Salem, Wenham, Beverly who married Elnor 1643, died 1683 in Beverly and was a pavior. The other was Rice of Boston who married Joanna, died before 1662 in Boston and was a joiner. I propose that Rice 21851 be edited to reflect the correct info for Rice who married Elnor and that Rice 674 be edited to reflect the correct info for Rice of Boston who married Joanna. Having studied Mr. Kenney's research I will volunteer myself as the editor.

I've added a research note with links to current research and a somewhat lengthy explanation on this guy, who in his present incarnation on Wikitree is a conflation of two Rice Edwards both in Massachusetts Bay. As it involves some fairly extensive edits and cuts, I'm not going to make them myself (at least not for a while, unless nobody else does).

Thanks for pointing that out. Good chance that "Rice" appears in records as a nickname for "Richard"--nicknames were different back then; I would likely have been called "Robin" rather than "Bob", which explains Robert of Locksley's famous nickname, "Robin Hood".

The genealogical records of the Church of the Latter Day Saints identify a Rice Edwards as being Christened on 30 November 1614 at Willoughby-With-Slothby, Lincolnshire, England. This is true within the pedigree resource files. However a closer look at the database "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975" reveals the name is "Ricardus" not "Rice."

Edwards-4284 and Edwards-674 appear to represent the same person because: These are a match--please merge. Somehow this man got separated from daughter Bethia (Edwards) Knowlton when I uploaded my database....thanks!
