Robert Lenthal Eells, who was an extensive landholder; one of the wealthiest citizens of his day; a man whose chief greatness consisted in the greatness of his soul; of unbounded hospitality; charitable; kind to the poor and the suffering; devoted to every thing public spirited; eminently patriotic; an able officer in the war of the Revolution; who opened his doors cheerfully and widely to all who were engaged in that struggle; and whose daughters, evinced their zeal for Liberty, in ministering to the wants of the soldiers, and in manufacturing cartridges for the use of the companies enrolled in the town."
