Henry was born about 1834. He married Maria Anna Tenforde on August 16, 1859 in Lawrenceburgh, Dearborn County, Indiana.[3][4] Roman Weinzapfel, a Catholic priest who traveled extensively in the area officiated the ceremony. Catholics were initially a minority in the Indiana area, and Weinzapfel was one of the few priests willing to travel to the smaller communities for services. As an aside, Weinzapfel was the victim of misplaced religious persecution that saw him locked in a state penitentiary until a comment by First Lady Sarah Polk led to his pardoning and release in 1845.[8]
Henry passed away in 1891. He is buried with his wife Mary at Saint Annes Catholic Cemetery (also known as Hamburg Catholic Cemetery) near Hamburg, Salt Creek Township, Franklin County, Indiana.[7] The two share a headstone.
Research Notes
John's birth date is unknown, and his age is listed as about the same (36) in both the 1860 and 1870 census records, which would put his birth year around either 1824 or 1834. The 1880 census supports the c. 1824 date, so that is what I've gone with for now. - C. McMillen
There is a family of Effings that immigrated to the Baltimore, Maryland area around the 1850s (John Effing and wife Christina, his presumed brother Bernard Effing and his wife Adelaide/Annie, who is presumably Christina's sister, and another brother Henry and his wife Anie) that may be related to the Franklin County Effings. I share a distant DNA connection with a descendant of that line and I believe the families were connected before immigrating to the states. - C. McMillen
The names "Johan Bernard Effing" and "Johanna Christina Bockwinkel" come up frequently as potential names for Henry's parents, but I have found nothing conclusive to link them other than the Effing name. There is another family of Effings in the Posey County, Indiana area (on the other side of the state) that fits with the known information about Bernard and Christina much better than the Franklin County Effings, though it's possible the families are related in some way as well. - C. McMillen

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:
