Biography

Jochem Egberts was born on March 6, 1777 in Noordwolde, Friesland. He was the son of Egbert Jellen and Hiltjen Pieters. Jochem was baptized Dutch Reformed on March 9 in Noordwolde.[1]

Jochem married Janna Beunk, daughter of Gerrit Jan Beunk and Berendina Mulders on October 28, 1820 in Almelo. At the time of marriage Jochem was a skipper ("schipper") and Janna a servant ("dienstbaar").[2]. The following children are on record:

  1. Egberdina Egberts, born on March 9, 1821 in Deventer.
  2. Berendina Egberts, born on July 8, 1822 in Deventer, m. 1849 Evert Harmen van Hummel.
  3. Garrit Egberts, born on May 31, 1823 in Deventer, d. 15 Sep 1823 at sea near the island of Urk.
  4. Gerrit Jan Egberts, born on July 8, 1824 in Deventer, d. September 29, 1824 in Zwartsluis
  5. Egbert Egberts, born on December 3, 1825 in Deventer, d. January 27, 1835 in Deventer.
  6. Hiltje Egberts, born on March 7, 1827 in Deventer, d. March 17, 1828 in Rotterdam.
  7. Janna Egberts, born on June 5, 1828 in Deventer, m. 1850 Gerrit Wagenvoorde.

Janna passed away on June 8, 1828, three days after giving birth to Janna.[3]

Research Notes

There is no record that Jochem remarried. If he indeed did not, his children were probably raised by relatives, or placed in an orphanage.

There is no record as yet of Jochem's death, but he passed away in or before 1844, the year Egberdina married.[4]
