Wibraham Egerton was christened on the 20th day of January 1832 in Rostherne, Cheshire, England. His father was William Egerton and his mother was Charlotte Elizabeth Loftus.[1]
The Egerton family had been in posession of Tatton Park for many centuries from as early as 1598 to the time of Wilbraham's birth in 1832. The family, through generations, had gone from much wealth to near bankruptcy and back to wealth. During the 19th century Tatton Park flourished reaching the height of its status during the ownership of Wilbrham Egerton.
Education
Wibraham Egerton was educated at Eton College and Christ Church in Oxford. He became a Justice of the Peace for Cheshire. His job was to act as a judicial officer of a lower or puisne court, elected or appointed by means of a commission (letters patent) to keep the peace. He dealt with local administrative applications in common law jurisdictions. Justices of the peace are appointed or elected from the citizens of the jurisdiction in which they serve, and are (or were) usually not required to have any formal legal education in order to qualify for the office.[2]
Marriage
Wibraham Egerton married on the 15 October 1857 Lady Mary Amherst, the only daughter of the 2nd Earl Amherst.[3][4] They had only one child, a daughter, Lady Gertrude Lucia Egerton, who later married the future 8th Earl of Albemarle.[5]
Lady Mary Egerton died in 1892, therefore, Wilbrham married for the second time to Alice Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville, the widow of the 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos. They were married on 8 August 1894. (Alice Graham-Montgomery, daughter of Sir Graham Graham-Montgomery, 3rd Baronet)[6] No children were born of this union.
Political Story
Wibraham Egerton was a member of the Conservative Party of England and first was elected to Parliament for North Cheshire in 1858 and held the seat until 1868. He was then elected in 1868 MP for Mid Cheshire and held the seat until 1883.[7] He was the second Chairman of the Manchester Ship Canal from 1887 to 1894. In 1897, he was created Earl Egerton.
Baron Wilbraham Egerton
Wilbrham Egerton was then appointed Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum (Lord Lieutenant) of Cheshire in March 1900, serving until 1905. He was then chairman of the Church Defence Institution, and an Ecclesiastical Commissioner. He died on 16 March 1909 at the age of 77.[8]
