John was born circa 1827. At lease one obituary states that he was born in England but most agree he was born and educated in Fredericton. He was a son of Robert and Emma (Unknown) Eggar. His father was born in England and his mother in New Brunswick.[1][2][3]
John married (1) Charity UNKNOWN prior to 1851. They had at least one child who died as an infant that year. Charity died in 1853 at the age of 28 and there is no evidence of further children from this marriage.
John married (2) Isabella Agnew of Kingsclear on September 28, 1854. She was a daugher of William Agnew.[3][4]
He lived in the Fredericton area and was a well known artist and house painter there, with examples of his art hanging at the time of his death in the Parliament Building and Supreme Court Room.[1][2] His paintings of the Grand Falls, Tobique and Temicouata Lakes were very well regarded in his time.[3] He later owned land and removed to Aroostook.[3]
John passed away on June 22, 1892 in Fredericton at the age of 65 after a brief illness. It is thought he suffered from the effecs of "painter's poison."[1] (Paint in those days often contained Arsenic or Lead) He was interred there at the Old Burial Ground.[5]
