Biography

In early 1830s Stephen Eggleston sailed his ship to Texas from the North Carolina coast. Along with him were his wife, JulIa Ann Moseley, and several small children. They sailed around Florida into the Gulf of Mexico stopping in New Orleans, and finally landing in Matagorda Bay on the Texas coast.

The Eggleston family stayed in Matagorda until preparations could be made to travel inland by wagon train in route to Bastrop and the Stephen F. Austin colony.

After arriving in Bastrop Stephen received land grants and land in the town of Bastrop. He contributed to the settlement by using his skills to build various buildings including the first meeting house/courthouse.

Stephen was a Private in the Mina Volunteers of the Texas Army, fought in the Texas Revolution serving in Captain R. M. Coleman's Company, and was at the Battles of Brushy Creek, Guadalupe and San Jacinto.

He was attacked by raiding Indians in front of his house in Bastrop and died three days later.

Stephen was born in 1796. He passed away in 1839.
