Biography

Florence Bertha was born in 1888. She was the daughter of Osmond Eilenberger and Emma Greenfelder. She passed away in 1937. [1]

There is quite a reputation surrounding Florence, with stories that have been passed down through the family: she supposedly was mistress to Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn. While getting her divorce from her second husband, Albert Adams, in the early 1920s, Rayburn paid for a trip for her, and her uncle, James Prall Howell, (who was her chaperone on a transatlantic trip to Paris, France, where they both enjoyed sight-seeing, going to the races and betting on the horses!) Her step-sister, Marguerite Amelia (Amy) adds that Florence also once lived with one of the Wanamakers (of NYC department store fame) Family stories abound about what a woman-about-town she was; very wealthy and very classy!

The following email was received by Rob Howell on March 17th (Happy St. Paddy's day!), 2014, from Stephen Jones and it is an account of his family's lore, which ties in perfectly with the Eilenberger/Howell lore, recorded above: Rob, I am related (he was my great great uncle) to Albert Adams. His family was from Northern Ireland and I understand that he was US representative of the family firm in the 1920s and 1930s. I am doing some genealogical research on this branch of the family and so came across this information. The story about Florence's relationship with Sam Rayburn is also part of our family lore, along with a belief that Albert received a considerable sum of money to have the divorce held in Paris to keep secret that Rayburn was co-respondent, though I have no idea if this is true - he was already a wealthy man. best regards Stephen Jones
