August 29:
"We moved on north through Grenoble to an area north of Montferrat, arriving about 1200. At 1800 we continued north to Curtain at which place we went into position for the night."
"At about 0800 Task Fore Bibo was attacked. By 0810 "B" Btry. was firing on advancing enemy infantry approaching from the east. At 0915 the FO party sent a message that they were destroying the radio. An OP near the battery continued directing fire. After mortar positions or the 83rd Chemical Bn. were over-run, the battery forded the Durance River and withdrew three miles to a rendezvous. Later they moved back to a position near La Grane and a new road block was established at Lauret."
August 30:
"At 0900 we moved on north to Montalieu, a little village near the Rhone, and went into position. The 978th FA moved up to re-enforce our fires."
"B Btry. in position between La Grane and Lauret registered and prepared defensive fires. The B Btry. FO party consisting of Lt. Eisenberg, Pfc. Sims, Pvt. Lenakis and Pvt. Sypek were reported missing in action as of the 29th of August. Today in an attempt to take off on an observing mission, Lt. McPhail and Lt. Habendott were killed."

In 2020 a group from France contacted us regarding Bernie. They were writing a history about the men in the graveyard that died in the battle that took place in August 1944. They have now affixed a commemorative plaque with Bernie's name, as well as his comrade in arms killed with him.
