As a young man, he worked for his father in a blacksmith shop and then later worked at the Washburn Milling Co. where his father was chief engineer. He married Louise Bjorn in 1920 near Sanger, ND. (They first lived at Alsen, ND, where he operated a blacksmith shop for 5 years.) They then moved to Bismarck where he worked as an area mechanic and blacksmith. She died in 1958. He has been a resident of the nursing home for the past 12 years. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Bismarck. He loved music and had musical talents in playing many instruments. When he was 12 years old, he played cornet, and was the youngest member of a local Washburn band that was started by his father. Survivors include two sisters: Freda Hughart, Hawthorne, Nev., and Lennie Gibbs, Hawthorne, Nev., and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, five brothers and nine infant children who died at birth. Arrangements were by Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn. (The Leader-News, Washburn, N. He and his brothers claimed Sandviken as their birthplace but their births were recorded at Högbo, on the northern border of Sandviken.

He gave his name as Frederick Iver Ekstrom when he registered for the WW I and WW 2 draft but his birth record shows his name as Ivar Fredric. He was always known as Iver pronounced by his family as "eever" which, I suppose, is the Swedish pronunciation.
