Biography

William was born around 1515, a guess. He was one of the witnesses of the will of William Tilly of Henlow dated 1 January 1579

He was buried on 15 August 1588 at Henlow, Bedfordshire "sheareman".[1] His will is held by Bedfordshire Archives and Records Service, which should name his living children, and his wife too if she really outlived him . It's said that his executor was Robert Tilley, son of William Tilly mentioned above, which has given rise to the speculation that Robert must have been William Elbourn's son in law. A non sequitur. When BARS reopens after the lockdown I'll probably purchase the will.

Research Notes

There are only two Elborne entries in Henlow parish register. I have removed Henlow as his place of birth as there's no evidence at all for this. As he only appears once in records, as Elborne, plus his will as Elbourne, I wonder where Welbourne and Welborne have been found. I've removed these too in the absence of a source. Albone is a fairly common LNAB in this part of Bedfordshire and I wonder if this or one of its many variations might have been his name. Still no obvious records though. But there were 64 Albone burials in Southill, 4 miles from Henlow, 1538-1618. I'll do some digging in the morning. Got to do something during lockdown!
