Family Search: Honor Elder Stafford

Family Search may have comflated Honor Elder and Honor Stafford

Family Search Record: [3]

The Family Search site shows Honor Elder Stafford (12 October 1689 – 1756) born in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [3]

The Family Search site shows Honor's death at 1756 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland and her burial that year in Ellicott City, Howard, Maryland. The location is probably the same, as the Ellicott City area was in the Howard District of Anne Arundel before the creation of Howard County itself. [3]

The Family Search site shows Honor married John Dorsey Sr (1688–1764) on 8 April 1708 at the Anne Arundel Circuit of the Methodist Episcopal Church. This is impossible as John Wesley, founder of Methodism, was not born until 17-- and the Methodist Episcopal Church was not created until after the American Revolution.[3]

Family Search gives the following children of Honor and her husband John Dorsey Senior:[3]

  1. Hannah Dorsey (1709–1789)
  2. Ruth Dorsey (1710–1782)
  3. Michael Dorsey (1711–1776)
  4. Honor Dorsey (1714–Deceased)
  5. Sarah Dorsey (1715–1790)
  6. Susannah Dorsey (1717–1770)
  7. Jemima Dorsey (1720–1770)
  8. Vachal Dorsey (1726–1798)
  9. Edward Dorsey (1728–1788)
  10. Nathan Dorsey (1731–1773)

Caution

John Dorsey, b. June 15, 1688, has one wife, b. 12 Oct 1689, who is currently presenting as two. Differences need to be resolved as to which was his wife:

  • Honor Elder-115, who may also be Honor Stafford, mother of Jemima who married a Dorsey
  • Honor Stafford-175, mother of Nathan, Edward, Michael, Vachel and Edward. The Stafford connection needs to be researched. There may be a genuine Honor Stafford who has become confused with Honor Elder.

Disambiguation: Multiple John and Honor Elders

Michael Dorsey III was the son of Michael Dorsey II and Honour Elder who were first cousins.

Michael Dorsey II was the son of Michael Dorsey I and Ruth Todd. Honour Elder was the daughter of Jemima Dorsey, the sister of Michael Dorsey I; Jemima Dorsey married John Elder, born 1708

Michael Dorsey I and his sister Jemima Dorsey were both children of John Dorsey and his wife Honor Elder, b. 1689. Honor's father, in turn, was John Elder, b. 1660.

Jemima's husband John Elder, born 1708, was the son of John Elder, b. 1683 and his wife Mary Morris.

Creating an ancestral chart for Michael Dorsey III will display these relationships.

Some have her as Honor Elder and there is an Honor Elder who married Michael Dorsey and this may be cause of the confusion; but according to recorded Dorsey history John Dorsey married Honor STAFFORD and is related to William Stafford. I think she is his daughter. Please see attached documents from the Hall of Records, Annapolis, MD! [4]

Some sources attempt to give Honor both family names. Doing so is probably in error.

Honor (Elder?) Stafford [5]

1701 Honor Stafford named in will of Honor Marriarts

Marriarts, Honor, 5th Mch., 1701; 25th Apr., 1701.

  • To son Daniel, ex., Honor Stafford and daus Margaret and Eliza:, personalty. *To son Edward, ½ of estate, real and personal.
  • To dau. Rachel, residue of estate, real and personal.
  • Test: Chas. Burges, Mahitaball Holland, Nich. Humphery.

Honor Sta....... is thought to have been the Honor Stafford who was left personalty in the will of Honor Marriarte, 25 Mar 1701. (Wills 11, f.21) Honor Marriarte was the mother of Rachel, who m 1) Benjamin Lawrence and 2) John Norwood, nephew of John Dorsey. Honor Marriarte and her husband Edward, were left personalty in the will of Richard Russel in Lower Norfolk Co, VA in 1667. It is also thought that Honor Sta....(Stafford) Dorsey was related to William Stafford who married Sarah Todd, widow of Thomas. Honor Dorsey was living in 1756 when she signed a deed of gift to her children. Since her name does not appear on later deeds, or in the will of her husband, it seems probable that she died soon after this date.[4]

1708 Marriage of Honor St. to John Dorsey

The Parish Register of St. Anne's Church, Annapolis, records a marriage on 8 March 1708 between John Dorsey and Honor St. --. [8]

Honor Stafford -- shown in the original record as "Honor St." -- married John Dorsey, 8 April 1708, at St Anne's Parish in Anne Arundel County. [6]

Mike Marshall interprets the bride to be Honor Stafford and reports that on 8 March 1707/08 in St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel County, he married Honor Stafford, b. 14 Jan 1688/89 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, d. 1756, Anne Arundel County, Maryland (Age 66 years) [9]

Warfield makes Honor be Honor Elder, and John Dorsey to be John (of Edward). "At sixteen years of age he married Honor Elder, heir of John Elder, a large landholder upon the Patapsco, near Sykesville." [10]

Find-a-Grave combines the accounts and has Col. Dorsey marrying Honor Elder on 8 April 1708 at St. Anne's Parish, adding that Honor was born in 1689 and died in 1756. [11]

Various ancestry sources repeat the 8 April 1708 date [12] combined with St. Anne's Parish [13] although there are other ancestry sources that identify John Dorsey's marriage year as 1711.[14]
