Claiborn Elder was born abt. 1810 in Charlotte County, Virginia. His parents were James Elder and Polly Mason. He was included in the 1820 Census, but not shown in 1830. It is believed that his family removed to Obion county around 1837 when his older brother, James, went to Obion county.
Claiborn married Mary Ann Foster on 29 Apr 1840 in Obion County, Tennessee. She was born abt. 1820. Her parents are unknown.
The 1840 Census for Obion County lists Claiborn, age between 20 and 30; his wife Mary Ann, age 20 to 30 and one other female age 20 to 30. Claiborn and Mary Ann had a daughter, Susan Jane in 1842. They had a second daughter, Mary Elizabeth, around 1843. Claiborn died sometime in 1844 in Obion county. The exact date or details are not known. The Obion County Will Book E, for 1845, Page 68 has an entry dated 2 December 1844, which appointed James Elder as an Administrative Bondsman for Claiborn Elder. The two daughters were placed under guardianship to Joshua Elder in Rutherford County. In 1850, they were living with Joshua’s sisters, Nancy and Susan Elder, in Rutherford County.
It is not known what happened to Mary Ann. However, since she isn’t mentioned in Claiborn’s will, it can be assumed that she died shortly after her last child’s birth, 1843.
