Helen (Elder) Young was born in Scotland.

Helen Elder was born on 13 September 1772 in Ballingry, Fife, Scotland. She was the daughter of John Elder and Janet Graham.^[1]

St Serf's Church of Scotland, Ballingry - likely where Helen was both baptised and married.

She married Thomas Young on 30 October 1795 in Ballingry, Fife.^[2]

They had the following children together:

• Janet, born 1797 in Ballingry^[3]
• Thomas, born 1799 in Ballingry^[4]
• Andrew, born 1803 in Ballingry^[5]
• David, born 1810 in Auchterderran^[6]

The family moved from Ballingry to Auchterderran sometime between 1803 and 1810, as their son David was born in Auchterderran. The two villages are close - only 4 miles apart.

Helen and her husband Thomas remained in Auchterderran, as we see them living in Cutty-Gates in the parish of Auchterderran in the 1841 census.^[7]

It is unknown when Helen died, but it would have been after June 1841 when the census was taken, and before March 1851, as she does not appear in the 1851 census.

Research Notes

• There is a gap of 7 years between sons Andrew and David, which could indicate that they had another child, but no records have been found thus far. Despite the gap, it is certain that David is their son, as both his birth and death records list "Elder" as his mother's maiden name. (Frayne-73 07:03, 23 October 2023 (UTC) )

• There is another Thomas and Helen Young who lived in Fife around a similar time period. Her surname is Cumming. They were married in 1802 in Dysart, Kirkcaldy.^[8] (Frayne-73 07:03, 23 October 2023 (UTC) )
