Biography

Maria Todd Elizar^[1] was born probably between 1804 and 1810^[2] in Kentucky,^[3] the daughter of Peter Elizar (mother unknown). On 26 Oct 1826,^[4] she married John Epperson Jr., and together they had seven children.^[5]

In 1860, John and Maria were living with their son Stephen and other unmarried children. In 1870, John was living in Berrys District with their married daughter Mary Jane Slade, and Maria was living in Richland District with their married daughter Nancy Hill. John died the following year. In 1880, Maria continued living next door to the Hills, now with her unmarried daughter, Martha.^[6]. She died 28 Sep 1888.^[7]

Research Notes

1. ↑ Edna Brinkman (1908, p. 225) refers to Maria as both "Marie" and "Maria" (on p. 225 and 234), and spells her last name as "Elizer" and "Elizar" (both on p. 225).
2. ↑ The census record reports ages which indicate a birth varying from 1804 and 1810, but favoring the latter date (three out of five censuses). Her marriage in 1826 would have been possible in either case.
3. ↑ The original GED for this profile places her birth in Missouri, without documentation. All of her census records give Kentucky as her birthplace.

6. ↑ The 1880 census lists Nancy Hill's neighbor as "M. T. Eperson", at age 70, but lists her as "M" (male) and "married". Martha is also listed as "M", overwritten as "F", also as "married". This appears to be a compound error on the part of the census taker, given that the best guess would be that "M. T." is Maria Todd Epperson (and in fact the FamilySearch database makes this association), who had already in 1870 been living with her daughter Nancy, and would have now been joined by her unmarried daughter (and Nancy's sister), Martha. This arrangement is supported by the fact that in 1900, Martha, now listed as "Bettie", continues to live with her widowed sister Nancy.
7. ↑ The date is from Brickman, 1908, p. 234. Her place of burial is unknown.
